Combine Ubuntu Linux and Windows 11 with WSL2

Now you don't have to choose between Linux and Windows or put up with awkward hybrid options such as dual-boot or putting one OS in a VM.

Many of the best tools for GPU-accelerated computing are Linux-based. For users interested in exploring GPU computing while still also running Windows apps, our recommended OS choice is Windows 11 Pro with WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. WSL2 lets Linux apps (including Linux GUI apps) run alongside Windows apps on the same desktop, with virtually the same performance as running natively. Now you can combine your favorite Linux scientific tools or NVIDIA CUDA app development with the huge library of Windows software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud. Of course, we also offer Ubuntu and Windows installations without the integration.

AMD Threadripper PRO:
The industry's leading high-end workstation platform

Now faster than ever: new AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX series processors!

Stratosphere Evolution T5 for Multi-GPU Accelerated Computing is powered by AMD's most advanced Threadripper processors, AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7000 WX series. New for 2024, AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX workstation CPUs offer 24 - 96 CPU cores as well as extraordinary expansion capability through 128 PCI Express 5.0 lanes and 8-channel DDR5 memory supporting up to 768GB RAM today and up to 2TB RAM in the future.

Standard and optional advanced NVIDIA GPUs

Stratosphere Evolution T5 is dedicated to multi-GPU accelerated computing for such applications as AI training and machine learning. In standard configuration, the system features dual NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 24GB graphics cards, NVIDIA's #1 fastest consumer graphics card. While NVIDIA markets the RTX 4090 as a consumer graphics cards, it has enormous power for AI and GPU compute, and it offers higher performance per dollar than NVIDIA's professional GPU lineup.

That said, NVIDIA's pro GPU lineup is better suited to triple or quad GPU installation, due to differences in cooler design. The pro GPUs have "blower" air coolers, consume only two slot spaces per card (at most), and are designed to be installed alongside other NVIDIA pro GPUs.

Consumer GeForce GPUs typically consume more than 2 slot spaces at the upper range, run hotter due to more power consumption, and require additional spacing between cards for adequate cooling. Thus it is impractical to install more than two high-end GeForce cards in a single system unless all of them are liquid cooled.

Supporting the highest GPU densities and maximum GPU compute power, this system may alternatively be configured with the upper range of NVIDIA's latest Ada Generation professional graphics cards, either as a single GPU or as dual / triple / quad GPUs in any combination:
  • NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada Generation 20GB pro graphics: 192 tensor cores, 6,144 CUDA cores
  • NVIDIA RTX 4500 Ada Generation 24GB pro graphics: 240 tensor cores, 7,680 CUDA cores
  • NVIDIA RTX 5000 Ada Generation 32GB pro graphics: 400 tensor cores, 12,800 CUDA cores
  • NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada Generation 48GB pro graphics: 568 tensor cores, 18,176 CUDA cores

Core system and Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPU highlights
  • Industry-fastest CPUs for multithreaded performance
  • 24 - 96 CPU cores ("workers") per processor, managing 48 - 192 simultaneous threads
  • 53% - 243% faster than Intel Core i9-14900K (Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core test)
  • 128 PCI Express 5.0 lanes supporting up to 4 fast graphics cards and Gen5 SSDs
  • 2X - 8X system expansion vs Intel Core i9, which supports 16 Gen5 + 24 Gen4 PCIe lanes
  • Up to 768GB DDR5 memory today; up to 2TB RAM with future 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs
  • 4X max memory vs Intel Core i9, which supports 192GB max RAM
  • Flagship AMD WRX90 workstation chipset and motherboard

This amazing raw CPU power is deployed through the most advanced workstation motherboard ever developed, based on AMD's flagship WXR90 workstation chipset. The motherboard features seven PCI Express 5.0 x16 expansion slots, six of which operate in full x16 mode. Typically these slots are used for graphics cards for multi-GPU computing or for large SSD storage arrays, or both. A total of 104 PCIe 5.0 lanes are dedicated to these expansion slots, and an additional 16 lanes drive four M.2 SSD slots, enabling up to four ultra-fast Gen5 SSDs in a single system even when all the PCIe x16 slots are occupied by graphics cards.

There are four processor options. The standard Threadripper PRO 7965WX processor features 24 CPU cores and delivers 53% faster multithreaded performance than Intel Core i9-14900K (Intel's fastest desktop processor), according to the popular Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core benchmark test. This means that Threadripper PRO 7965WX should be markedly faster for heavy workloads involving either multiple apps or demanding software that can take advantage of multiple CPU cores.

While the base Threadripper PRO 7965WX is impressive, three upgrade processor options offer even faster performance. The 32-core Threadripper PRO 7975WX offers about 2X the performance of Intel Core i9-14900K, and the 64-core Threadripper PRO 7985WX offers about 3X the performance, according to the Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core test. At the top of the line, the 96-core Threadripper PRO 7995WX delivers nearly 2.5X the multithreaded performance of Intel's best Core i9 CPU

Modern processors are composed of multiple internal CPUs that perform work in parallel like a team of workers. The number of software "threads" per processor is a measure of how much work can be performed simultaneously, in parallel. The AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPUs for Stratosphere Evolution T5 process 48 - 192 simultaneous threads, with the base 24-core processor managing 48 threads and the top 96-core model managing 192 threads.

You may configure your new Stratosphere Evolution T5 workstation with any of the following AMD Threadripper CPUs, which you can choose in our configurator:

  • Threadripper PRO 7965WX: 24 cores, 48 threads, 4.2 - 5.3 GHz (standard)
  • Threadripper PRO 7975WX: 32 cores, 64 threads, 4.0 - 5.3 GHz
  • Threadripper PRO 7985WX: 64 cores, 128 threads, 3.2 - 5.1 GHz
  • Threadripper PRO 7995WX: 96 cores, 192 threads, 2.5 - 5.1 GHz
Benefits of AMD Threadripper PRO workstations vs mainstream desktop PCs

AMD Threadripper workstations go well beyond mainstream desktop PCs (such as Intel Core i9 and AMD Ryzen 9 systems) in several key ways:

  • More high-performance CPU cores: Threadripper PRO 7000 WX processors have 24 - 96 internal CPU cores, all of which are high-performance cores operating at the fastest possible speeds. By comparison, while the latest Intel Core i9-14900K processor has 24 cores, only 8 of those cores are "performance" cores, while the remaining 16 cores operate at lower clock speed and are intended to handle low-priority background tasks. Thus an Intel Core i9 processor cannot operate massively parallel workloads at the highest performance to the degree that AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX processors can.
  • More CPU threads: 48 - 192 simultaneous threads, compared to 32 for the latest 14th Gen Intel Core i9. Enables more work to be performed in parallel, simultaneously. The higher thread count helps avoid competition between threads for CPU time or memory access, thus minimizing chokepoints that can slow down or momentarily freeze applications.
  • More fast PCI Express lanes: 128 Gen5 PCIe lanes vs 16 Gen5 + 24 Gen4 PCIe lanes for Intel Core i9 with top Z790 chipset. Enables up to four graphics cards to run at maximum performance in tandem with an array of ultra-fast Gen5 SSDs. Particularly beneficial for AI training / machine learning using multiple advanced graphics cards (used in GPU compute mode), as well as large, high-performance SSD storage arrays.
  • More RAM: up to 768GB RAM, 4X the memory limit for Intel Core i9. Future support for up to 2TB RAM when 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs are available in volume.
  • ECC Registered RAM: ECC (error-correcting) RAM avoids data errors, while registered memory DIMMs (RDIMMs) support higher capacities. Threadripper PRO 7000 WX systems will support up to 2TB RAM when 256GB DDR5 ECC RDIMMs are available in the future. Mainstream desktop PCs can't use ECC RDIMMs, so have inherently lower maximum RAM capacities and are more prone to data errors.
  • Fast networking: Two standard wired 10G LAN ports provide dual network connectivity at up to 10Gb/s, while mainstream desktop PCs provide a single 2.5Gb/s LAN port at best. Additionally, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are optional.
Relative CPU performance:
AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX vs Intel Core i9-14900K

Here's what you can expect for relative maximum performance for AMD Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPUs compared to Intel's top mainstream desktop CPU, Core i9-14900K:

Cinebench 2024 is the industry's leading independent benchmark tool for measuring maximum CPU performance. The chart shows multi-core test results, measuring CPU performance when all CPU cores (mini CPUs inside each processor) are utilized in parallel at 100% capacity. The chart shows the maximum potential performance of each processor.

Compared to Intel Core i9-14900K, which has 24 cores managing 32 simultaneous software threads, here is the relative maximum performance of each Threadripper processor:

  • Core i9-14900K (24 cores / 32 threads): baseline
  • Threadripper PRO 7965WX (24 cores / 48 threads): 53% faster
  • Threadripper PRO 7975WX (32 cores / 64 threads): 94% faster
  • Threadripper PRO 7985WX (64 cores / 128 threads): 206% faster
  • Threadripper PRO 7995WX (96 cores / 192 threads): 243% faster

Software that can be run across multiple CPU cores is known as multi-threaded software, executing its operations in multiple independent threads. Demanding modern software is typically multi-threaded. However, older software and some software processes in modern applications are single-threaded and must be executed by a single CPU core.

Single-core performance is virtually identical for each Threadripper processor. The faster Threadripper models gain their advantage through deploying more internal CPU cores in parallel, like a call center dividing a large incoming call volume across a team of reps.

Multiple CPU cores assist even single-threaded software processes by proving more available cores for multitasking processes in parallel. This works much like more checkout lanes help more shoppers check out faster. Each shopper may be "single-threaded," needing to scan every item with a single scanner, but dozens of available checkout lanes enable dozens of shoppers to check out simultaneously. No shopper needs to wait for other shoppers to finish checking out before scanning their items as fast as they can.

Few people need the extreme performance of Threadripper PRO 7995WX, which costs more than most people spend on two entire computers. However, Threadripper PRO 7965WX and 7975WX provide real performance value at a price that demanding workstation users can afford. For exceptionally high performance challenges, Threadripper PRO 7985WX is justified by slashing user wait times for computer processing, where such delays are CPU bound.

Beyond CPU performance: 80 PCI Express lanes for system expansion

Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPUs in tandem with a WRX90-series motherboard supports 2X - 3X system expansion compared to an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU with Z790 motherboard. System expansion is defined as number and speed of PCI Express lanes, which are the communication links between expansion components (such as graphics cards and SSDs) and the processor.

Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPUs with WRX90 motherboard offer 128 PCI Express 5.0 (Gen5) lanes. By comparison, an Intel Core i9-14900K CPU with Z790 motherboard offers only 16 Gen5 lanes, as well as 24 Gen4 lanes.

As a result, a Threadripper PRO 7000 WX system can support up to four fast GPUs for GPU compute, AI training and machine learning, plus at least four top-speed Gen5 SSDs. By comparison, the typical Core i9 system is limited to a single GPU operating with full 16 lanes and a single Gen5 SSD (if any).

Benefits for GPU-accelerated computing and massive SSD storage

Consider GPU-accelerated computing, where a graphics card is repurposed to become a coprocessor in the system, able to marshal its thousands of cores for computing work instead of creating a 3D virtual world (typically for gaming). Led by NVIDIA, GPU computing is driving AI neural networks and machine learning in general. GPUs are so successful at high-performance computing tasks that NVIDIA now makes the great majority of its revenue from data centers.

Ideally a GPU-accelerated workstation would connect many powerful GPUs to a single CPU, as it is more efficient to have fewer captains and more workers. However, the limiting factor turns out to be the number of available fast PCI Express lanes. A GPU operating at full speed will consume 16 PCIe lanes. Thus a mainstream desktop CPU (such as Intel Core i9) doesn't even have enough PCIe lanes to connect two GPUs at full speed.

These new Threadripper PRO 7000 WX CPUs and their massive connectivity make possible a personal supercomputer. Beyond connecting more GPUs, the CPUs can also access more RAM (memory) as well as massive NVMe SSD storage. A consumer desktop PC normally can connect to only two or three NVMe SSDs, due again to a shortage of PCIe lanes. Each SSD consumes four PCIe lanes. While three SSDs is plenty of storage for most people, others have much more aggressive storage requirements. A pro photographer can fill up a 1TB NVMe SSD with only 20,000 images. That may sound like a lot, but some photographers take thousands of pictures per day. In only three months, they can fill three 4TB SSDs and be out of space on a typical high-end consumer desktop PC.

Now with Stratosphere Evolution T-series, that same photographer can store 860TB of images on fast NVMe storage, enough for about 2.4 years usage instead of 3 months. The same massive storage capacity can be put to work handling image and video databases, helping international security with applications like facial recognition. With the storage locally connected, it's much faster to access and search than cloud databases, while also saving large carrying costs for massive online storage.
