Combine Ubuntu Linux and Windows 11 with WSL2

Now you don't have to choose between Linux and Windows or put up with awkward hybrid options such as dual-boot or putting one OS in a VM.

Many of the best tools for GPU-accelerated computing are Linux-based. For users interested in exploring GPU computing while still also running Windows apps, our recommended OS choice is Windows 11 Pro with WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. WSL2 lets Linux apps (including Linux GUI apps) run alongside Windows apps on the same desktop, with virtually the same performance as running natively. Now you can combine your favorite Linux scientific tools or NVIDIA CUDA app development with the huge library of Windows software, such as Adobe Creative Cloud. Of course, we also offer Ubuntu and Windows installations without the integration.

  • 2X max memory vs Intel Core i9, which supports 192GB max RAM
  • Advanced AMD TRX90 high-end desktop (HEDT) chipset and motherboard

The new Threadripper 7000 generation is both cheaper and faster than the prior generation, comparing Threadripper processors with the same number of CPU cores. The top value leader is the 24-core Threadripper 7960X, which is standard for this Stratosphere Evolution system, replacing the 16-core model that was previously standard. Threadripper 7960X offers 73% higher performance per dollar compared to the prior 24-core Threadripper PRO 5565WX, based on the Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core benchmark test.

What's more, Threadripper 7960X delivers 53% faster multithreaded performance than Intel Core i9-14900K (Intel's fastest desktop processor), according to the popular Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core benchmark test. This means that Threadripper 7960X should be markedly faster for heavy workloads involving either multiple apps or demanding software that can take advantage of multiple CPU cores.

While the base Threadripper 7960X is impressive, two upgrade processor options offer even faster performance. The 32-core Threadripper 7970X offers about 2X the performance of Intel Core i9-14900K, and the 64-core Threadripper 7980X offers about 3X the performance, according to the Cinebench 2024 Multi-Core test.

Modern processors are composed of multiple internal CPUs that perform work in parallel like a team of workers. The number of software "threads" per processor is a measure of how much work can be performed simultaneously, in parallel. The AMD Threadripper 7000 CPUs for Stratosphere Evolution process 48 - 128 simultaneous threads, with the base 24-core processor managing 48 threads and the top 64-core model managing 128 threads.

You may configure your new Stratosphere Evolution workstation with any of the following AMD Threadripper CPUs, which you can choose in our configurator:

  • Threadripper 7960X: 24 cores, 48 threads, 4.2 - 5.3 GHz (standard)
  • Threadripper 7970X: 32 cores, 64 threads, 4.0 - 5.3 GHz
  • Threadripper 7980X: 64 cores, 128 threads, 3.2 - 5.1 GHz
Benefits of AMD Threadripper workstations vs mainstream desktop PCs

AMD Threadripper workstations go well beyond mainstream desktop PCs (such as Intel Core i9 and AMD Ryzen 9 systems) in several key ways:

  • More high-performance CPU cores: Threadripper 7000 processors have 24 - 64 internal CPU cores, all of which are high-performance cores operating at the fastest possible speeds. By comparison, while the latest Intel Core i9-14900K processor has 24 cores, only 8 of those cores are "performance" cores, while the remaining 16 cores operate at lower clock speed and are intended to handle low-priority background tasks. Thus an Intel Core i9 processor cannot operate massively parallel workloads at the highest performance to the degree that AMD Threadripper 7000 processors can.
  • More CPU threads: 48 - 128 simultaneous threads, compared to 32 for the latest 14th Gen Intel Core i9. Enables more work to be performed in parallel, simultaneously. The higher thread count helps avoid competition between threads for CPU time or memory access, thus minimizing chokepoints that can slow down or momentarily freeze applications.
  • More fast PCI Express lanes: 48 Gen5 + 32 Gen4 PCIe lanes vs 16 Gen5 + 24 Gen4 PCIe lanes for Intel Core i9 with top Z790 chipset. Enables up to three graphics cards to run at maximum performance in tandem with an array of ultra-fast Gen5 SSDs. Particularly beneficial for AI training / machine learning using multiple advanced graphics cards (used in GPU compute mode), as well as large, high-performance SSD storage arrays.
  • More RAM: up to 384GB RAM, twice the memory limit for Intel Core i9. Future support for up to 1TB RAM when 256GB DDR5 RDIMMs are available in volume.
  • ECC Registered RAM: ECC (error-correcting) RAM avoids data errors, while registered memory DIMMs (RDIMMs) support higher capacities. Threadripper 7000 systems will support up to 1TB RAM when 256GB DDR5 ECC RDIMMs are available in the future. Mainstream desktop PCs can't use ECC RDIMMs, so have inherently lower maximum RAM capacities and are more prone to data errors.
  • Fast networking: Two standard wired LAN ports provide dual network connectivity at up to 10Gb/s and 2.5Gb/s, while mainstream desktop PCs provide a single 2.5Gb/s LAN port at best. Additionally, our Threadripper 7000 systems support the latest Wi-Fi 7 standards, for double the speed of Wi-Fi6 and greater wireless range, as well as Bluetooth 5.3.
Relative CPU performance: AMD Threadripper 7000 vs Intel Core i9-14900K

Here's what you can expect for relative maximum performance for AMD Threadripper 7000 CPUs compared to Intel's top mainstream desktop CPU, Core i9-14900K:

Cinebench 2024 is the industry's leading independent benchmark tool for measuring maximum CPU performance. The chart shows multi-core test results, measuring CPU performance when all CPU cores (mini CPUs inside each processor) are utilized in parallel at 100% capacity. The chart shows the maximum potential performance of each processor.

Compared to Intel Core i9-14900K, which has 24 cores managing 32 simultaneous software threads, here is the relative maximum performance of each Threadripper processor:

  • Core i9-14900K (24 cores / 32 threads): baseline
  • Threadripper 7960X (24 cores / 48 threads): 53% faster
  • Threadripper 7970X (32 cores / 64 threads): 97% faster
  • Threadripper 7980X (64 cores / 128 threads): 205% faster
  • Threadripper PRO 7995WX (96 cores / 192 threads): 243% faster

The flagship Threadripper PRO 7995WX processor is available for top-of-line Stratosphere Evolution T5.

Software that can be run across multiple CPU cores is known as multi-threaded software, executing its operations in multiple independent threads. Demanding modern software is typically multi-threaded. However, older software and some software processes in modern applications are single-threaded and must be executed by a single CPU core.

Single-core performance is virtually identical for each Threadripper processor. The faster Threadripper models gain their advantage through deploying more internal CPU cores in parallel, like a call center dividing a large incoming call volume across a team of reps.

Multiple CPU cores assist even single-threaded software processes by proving more available cores for multitasking processes in parallel. This works much like more checkout lanes help more shoppers check out faster. Each shopper may be "single-threaded," needing to scan every item with a single scanner, but dozens of available checkout lanes enable dozens of shoppers to check out simultaneously. No shopper needs to wait for other shoppers to finish checking out before scanning their items as fast as they can.

Few people need the extreme performance of Threadripper PRO 7995WX, which costs more than most people spend on two entire computers. However, Threadripper 7960X and 7970X provide real performance value at a price that demanding workstation users can afford. For exceptionally high performance challenges, Threadripper 7980X is justified by slashing user wait times for computer processing, where such delays are CPU bound.

Benefits for GPU-accelerated computing and massive SSD storage

Consider GPU-accelerated computing, where a graphics card is repurposed to become a coprocessor in the system, able to marshal its thousands of cores for computing work instead of creating a 3D virtual world (typically for gaming). Led by NVIDIA, GPU computing is driving AI neural networks and machine learning in general. GPUs are so successful at high-performance computing tasks that NVIDIA now makes the great majority of its revenue from data centers.

Ideally a GPU-accelerated workstation would connect many powerful GPUs to a single CPU, as it is more efficient to have fewer captains and more workers. However, the limiting factor turns out to be the number of available fast PCI Express lanes. A GPU operating at full speed will consume 16 PCIe lanes. Thus a mainstream desktop CPU (such as Intel Core i9) doesn't even have enough PCIe lanes to connect two GPUs at full speed.

These new Threadripper 7000 CPUs and their massive connectivity make possible a personal supercomputer. Beyond connecting more GPUs, the CPUs can also access more RAM (memory) as well as massive NVMe SSD storage. A consumer desktop PC normally can connect to only two or three NVMe SSDs, due again to a shortage of PCIe lanes. Each SSD consumes four PCIe lanes. While three SSDs is plenty of storage for most people, others have much more aggressive storage requirements. A pro photographer can fill up a 1TB NVMe SSD with only 20,000 images. That may sound like a lot, but some photographers take thousands of pictures per day. In only three months, they can fill three 4TB SSDs and be out of space on a typical high-end consumer desktop PC.

Now with Stratosphere Evolution T-series, that same photographer can store 860TB of images on fast NVMe storage, enough for about 2.4 years usage instead of 3 months. The same massive storage capacity can be put to work handling image and video databases, helping international security with applications like facial recognition. With the storage locally connected, it's much faster to access and search than cloud databases, while also saving large carrying costs for massive online storage.
